With its Kalkhoff, FOCUS, Raleigh, Univega and Rixe bicycle brands, Derby Cycle is the largest bicycle manufacturer in Germany in terms of sales. In addition, Derby Cycle offers further mobility solutions with the leasing brand lease-a-bike and the e-bike insurance product protect-a-bike. At the Cloppenburg site in Northern Germany, several hundred thousand bikes are produced each year, including more than 100,000 e-bikes.

This makes Derby Cycle the leader in this sector within Germany. However, the extensive product range also includes high-quality mountain bikes, road bikes, trekking, city, cross and children’s bikes.

Made in Germany - for almost 100 years

Made in Germany is a firm part of the company’s philosophy: almost 100 years ago, 16-year-old country postman Heinrich Kalkhoff founded the Kalkhoff brand at Derby Cycle’s current production site and developed it into a bicycle brand with an international presence. To start with he sold bicycle parts and then, a short time later, began making his own frames, meaning that complete bicycles were leaving the production facility as early as 1927. During the 1950s, he benefitted from the bicycle boom in Germany. Since Derby Cycle took over Kalkhoff in 1988, the Kalkhoff brand, with its bicycles and, above all, its e-bikes, has become the clear market leader.

The Derby Cycle brands

In addition to Kalkhoff, Derby Cycle's portfolio includes a number of other brands: The English traditional brand Raleigh places a particular emphasis on design, with high-quality leather saddles and grips and muted colours. In the sports sector of the market, with the internationally-renowned FOCUS brand, Derby Cycle focuses on road bikes, mountain bikes and, above all, e-mountain bikes with agility that lifts mountain biking to a new level. The Californian brand Univega also belong to Derby Cycle. Their bikes are designed for difficult, demanding routes with a wide selection of geometries and special equipment.  In addition, Derby Cycle offers further mobility solutions with the leasing brand lease-a-bike and the e-bike insurance product protect-a-bike.

German engineering skill

At the Cloppenburg site, experienced engineers design frames and drive systems. They put their own ideas into practice and incorporate new technologies and trends. In recent years, the development of a bicycle has become more and more of a holistic process for Derby Cycle. Within the e-bike segment, in particular, many innovations have been “Made in Cloppenburg” in recent years.

Production with a great deal of craftsmanship

Alongside engineering skill, careful craftsmanship plays an important role at Derby Cycle. This runs throughout the entire production process, from lacing the spokes of the wheels and gluing on the decals through to screwing together the components in the final assembly procedure.

The bicycles are submitted to ongoing checks in the company’s own test centres – under conditions that are even more demanding than those stipulated in the DIN and EN standards. Almost 700 of the almost 1000-strong staff are employed in production work.

Constant growth

Following the takeover by the Dutch family company Pon, which employs more than 13,000 staff worldwide, Derby Cycle has grown continually since 2012. As part of Pon.Bike, the bicycle division of Pon, which includes Gazelle, Cervelo and Santa Cruz, among others, the Northern German company benefits from the international knowledge and experience of its parent company and from the many synergies that are enabled through close collaboration with its affiliate brands.
