In the early 1970s, a small, wild group of bike fanatics came up with the idea of speeding down the gravel trails of Mount Tamalpais in California on an old cruiser bike with thick balloon tyres. And so the mountain bike was born. One of those bikers was Ben Lawee, who founded the Univega brand in 1970, in his small bicycle shop in Long Beach, California. Today, the mountain bike brand still offers bikes that are also designed for the most difficult, demanding routes with a wide selection of geometries and special equipment, true to the motto “ride it your way”. Since 2001, Univega, including the worldwide rights for production and sale, has been owned by Derby Cycle.
